After Holly's (played by Sissy Spacek) mother passed away, her father moved her to a small town in South Dakota. There, 15-year-old Holly met Kit (played by Martin Sheen), a gangster 10 years her senior. The two soon became lovers. Kit does nothing all day long and does odd jobs. Holly's father is strongly opposed to their relationship. One day, Kit broke into Holly's home, packed her luggage and wanted to take her away, but was stopped by Holly's father. Kit shot and killed Holly's father. Then, Kit set fire to Holly's house, pretending that all three of them had perished in the flames. Kit drove Holly to a primeval forest in his car, and the two of them led a life like that of primitive people. But soon, someone spotted their whereabouts.
