By the beach, huge waves are surging. The valiant knight Brock (Max?) Feng? Max von Sydow (played by Sydow) and the Black Death (played by Bente?) Bengt Ekerot has set up a life-and-death chessboard. While playing chess, the knight was reflecting on his life, and what he saw and heard coincided with the picture in the Bible. In the later period of the Crusades in the 14th century, a plague spread across the European continent, causing great suffering to the people. Brock once met a couple in a circus. The husband was a devout deity and extremely devout, while the wife was more realistic and obedient. Their mutual support and care made happiness within easy reach. The knight met the blacksmith couple in the woods. The blacksmith was extremely rude and his wife was rather flirtatious. They performed a duet to passers-by in the woods, as if they were a pair of ridiculous puppets. Finally, after the collective worship ceremony, the samurai and his friends once again encountered Death. The helplessness, fear, anger and doubt of the past all turned into the questioning of life... This film won the Grand Prix of the Jury at the 10th Cannes Film Festival.[Collapse]
