In 1928, the Japanese translator of the puppet state of Manchukuo, ITO Hidehiko (played by Nakamura Hiroshi), left his Chinese lover Ding Hui (played by Zhang Ziyi) and returned to Japan. Several years later, when he came back to China and arrived in Shanghai, he had transformed into a senior spy. By this time, Ding Hui had become a member of the underground anti-Japanese organization and was in love with the leader of the organization, Xie Ming (played by Feng Yuanzheng). When the anti-Japanese organization went to the railway station to pick up the assassin they had hired from outside to kill the Japanese intelligence officer Yamamoto, they mistmisted him for a junior clerk, Situ (played by Liu Ye). In the chaos, Ding Hui killed Situ's girlfriend, Yiling (played by Li Bingbing), and Situ was captured by ITO Hidehiko. After being released, Situ, who was extremely puzzled by a series of experiences, vowed to avenge Yiling. Ding Hui reunites with ITO Hidehiko and becomes an important pawn set up by the two forces to take advantage of each other. She herself is suffering from inner torment for mistakenly killing an innocent person. At a ball held at a Japanese club, ITO Hidehiko told Ding Hui that both Yamamoto and Xie Ming were dead. Ding Hui was shocked and wanted to assassinate ITO Hidehiko. Just then, Si Tu burst into the ball with a gun.[Collapse]
