The story of this film is based on the true event that 61,000 Allied prisoners were forced to build the Thailand-Myanmar Railway during World War II. Captain Ernest Gordon, a young Scottish officer, was captured by the Japanese in a battle. He, along with Major Campbell and others, was forced to become slaves to the Emperor to build a railway section from Thailand to Myanmar. In the prisoner-of-war concentration camp, they endured cruel torture, but also forged a strong friendship during the days when life was worse than death. Ernest set up a "jungle university" in the concentration camp to firmly unite the prisoners of war together. The brutality of the Japanese army made them unable to bear it any longer. Major Campbell finally decided to carry out an escape plan, but the failure of the plan made a comrade-in-arms who had once had deep conflicts with him sacrifice himself to save his life.[Collapse]
