On the surface, Vera seems to be a cleaning lady, but a secret is deeply hidden in her heart. In her spare time, Vera would help women who were pregnant during the war to have abortions through the operating room provided by her friend Lily (portrayed by Ruth Sheen), an act that was illegal in Britain at that time.
