The freezing northern city of Abashiri is a sparsely populated area and also a place where many prisoners are serving their sentences. The young gangster member, Shinichi Tsuruoka (played by Ken Takakura), was sent here for stabbing the leader of a rival gang. Shinichi, who grew up in the southern part of the country, was not accustomed to the severe cold in Abashiri. Besides, the bandit Kanda Kenzo (played by Hiroji Minamihara) who shared the same cell and the self-styled IDA (played by Tetsu Abe) often caused him trouble. Shinichi swallowed his pride and hoped to be released from prison as soon as possible to return to his mother (played by Akiko Kazumi). He was born into a broken family and fled from it because he rebelled against his stepfather, Kunizao (played by Akira Sawa). From his sister's letter, he learned that his mother was seriously ill and had little time left. Shinichi was hoping for parole but failed. Just then, Kanda and IDA were planning to escape from prison, so he decided to take a desperate risk with this group of desperate criminals...
