Barber Eddie (played by Billy Bob Thornton) leads an unremarkable life. His wife Doris (played by Frances McDormand), who works as a bookkeeper in a department store, is estranged from him. Eddie, relying on his husband's intuition, concludes that his wife is having an affair with her boss Dave. One day, a guest that Eddie was receiving boasted about the emerging dry cleaning business and tried to persuade Eddie to invest. Unwilling to be lonely in the small town for the rest of his life, Eddie decided to take a share and sent an anonymous threatening letter to Dave to demand money. Eddie got the hush money as he wished, but the matter was soon exposed. Dave found Eddie to vent his anger but was killed instead. Dave's death led to Doris's imprisonment, but Eddie was not suspected. So he remained detached from the incident and spent his days only relying on the piano music of the young girl Betty (played by Scarlett Johansson). Soon, a car accident took a sudden turn for the worse... This film won 19 awards including the Best Director Award at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, the Best Cinematography Award at the British Academy Film Awards in 2002, the Best Actor of the Year and Best Screenplay from the London Film Institute.[Collapse]
