David Lurie (played by John Malkovich) teaches at a university in Cape Town. However, at the age of over fifty, he was punished by the school for luring and having a relationship with a female student. At the hearing organized by the school, David confessed to the accusations made by the school authorities without the slightest sign of repentance. Forced to quit his job, David came to his daughter Lucy's (played by Jessica Haines) farm in a mountain town. However, he was unexpectedly robbed in a house and raped by three criminals. David felt extremely guilty for his helplessness, but his daughter's cold handling of the matter made him extremely angry. Moreover, his daughter's repeated concessions to the black neighbor made him even more puzzled. David felt ashamed. He felt as if he were living like a dog... The film is adapted from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same name and won the Best Film Award at the Middle East Film Festival in 2008 as well as the International Federation of Film Critics Award at the Toronto Film Festival.[Collapse]
