The story takes place in Thebes, ancient Greece. After Oedipus killed his father and married his mother, he had two sons - Etheocles and Polynices, as well as two daughters - Antigone (played by Irene Papas) and Ismene. Polynesian returned to his homeland with the help of his father-in-law's troops to contend for the throne with his elder brother Etheocles. As a result, the two brothers killed each other. Creon ascended the throne as his uncle. He held a grand funeral for Eteocles, declared Polynices a traitor and forbade his body from being buried. Creon ordered that whoever buried Polygneces would be sentenced to death. Antigone followed the divine law and fulfilled the duty of a relative by burying her brother. As a result, she was ordered to be put to death by Creon. Then the prophet of Thebes told Creon that he had offended the gods. Creon rushed to rescue Antigone, only to find that she was dead. Hymon, the son of Creon and the fiance of Antigone, drew his sword to assassinate Creon and then committed suicide. When Creon's wife heard that their son had died, she also committed suicide. Creon ended up in a tragic situation of being all alone.[Collapse]
