On Christmas Day in 1907, two generations of the Aikoda family shared a Christmas dinner together, enjoying a warm and harmonious atmosphere. But the good times didn't last long. Oscar (Allan Edwall), the father of the young protagonists Alexander (played by Bertil Guve) and Fanny (played by Pernilla Allwin), suddenly had a stroke while rehearsing "Hamlet". On his deathbed, he entrusted the grand theatre he had painstakingly built to his wife Emily (played by Ewa Froling). A year later, Emily remarried the cold and cruel young bishop Edward with her two children. Edward's mother and sister were domineering and mean. Alexander's conflicts with his stepfather became increasingly acute, but he could only endure them in silence. When the old grandmother Helena (played by Gunn Wallgren) learned of this, she secretly asked her old friend for help and finally enabled the children to regain their freedom. Emily also fled from the bishop's home, and from then on, the family was reunited again, enjoying the happiness of family life. This film won multiple awards at the 56th Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Foreign Language Film.[Collapse]
