The tragic experiences in his childhood left a deep estrangement between Michael (played by Ryan Reynolds) and his father Charles (played by Willem Dafoe). Now a well-known novelist, Michael has just completed a novel called "Fireflies in the Garden". This novel records all the pains of his childhood. The good news that Michael's mother, Lisa (played by Julia Roberts), had finally completed her college education brought him back to his hometown, where he found everything familiar as well as a painful past.
