Pierre (played by Hardy Kruger) is a former French Air Force pilot. During a battle, his plane crashed and he lost his memory. At about the age of thirty, he returned to Paris after the war and led a monotonous life with his girlfriend Madeleine (played by Nicole Courcel). But was troubled by memory loss and post-war syndrome. One day, he met a little girl named Sibel (played by Patricia Gozzi) who was sent to a convent by her father. After learning about her being abandoned by her parents, Pierre began to pretend to be her father and go to the convent to pick her up every weekend. They played together by the Seine River. They had their own secret codes and even their own rituals. Sibel's simplicity and clarity seemed to infuse Pierre's gloomy life with sunshine, and his spiritual wounds were gradually healed. However, this pure friendship drew suspicion, misunderstanding and criticism from outsiders, and even complaints from the monastery and the intervention of the police. On a peaceful Christmas Eve, Pierre and Sibel leaned against each other by the river, yet neither of them knew what awaited them behind the darkness... This film won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1963.[Collapse]
