A young writer from the southern United States, Stinger (played by Peter MacNicol), comes to Brooklyn for a living and meets Sophie (played by Meryl Streep) and Nathan (played by Kevin Kline) who live upstairs. They expressed their enthusiasm for making friends with the young writer, and Stinger readily accepted their invitation. After gradually getting to know each other, they developed a close and friendly relationship with each other. During this process, Stindgo learned that Sophie often cried and was sad because of Nathan's suspicion and rage, but she loved Nathan very much. What worried her most was that Nathan's life without her would be unimaginable. Sophie was Polish. After World War II, she came to the United States.
