The story takes place in Catania, Italy. Antonio (played by Marcello Mastroianni) has a handsome face and is a well-known playboy in the small town. Many girls were so tempted by his rumors that they came to him out of admiration, hoping to become his wife. Ultimately, Antonio chose a woman named Barbara (played by Claudia Cardinale), and the two walked hand in hand into the wedding hall. After getting married, Barbara found out that her husband was all show and no substance, actually having a weak personality. Feeling deceived, Barbara decided to leave Antonio. To save his son's face, Antonio's father did many absurd things and eventually died a tragic death. However, Antonio, by chance, managed to get the maid in the family pregnant.[Collapse]
