The story takes place in the early 1930s. Lillian (played by Jane Fonda) goes to Vienna to look for her former friend Julia (played by Vanessa Redgrave). After arriving at the destination, Lillian realizes that Julia was injured in a fierce conflict with fascist supporters and was admitted to the hospital. She has since disappeared without a trace. After Lillian returned to her own life, she unexpectedly received a letter from Julia. In the letter, Julia asked Lillian to help her invest 50,000 US dollars in an anti-Nazi organization.
