The story takes place in a remote small village in Shanxi Province during the Republic of China era in the 1930s. The village head, in an effort to curry favor with the powerful, married his daughter to the son of the county magistrate. From his daughter's mouth, he learned a piece of news that there would be a guaranteed harvest: if a "Li Yilian Shrine" was built in the village, a huge amount of relief grain and silver dollars would be allocated by the county.
