On the ancient and vast African continent, there has been an extremely cruel custom passed down for thousands of years. Here, girls have to undergo circumcision when they reach a certain age. Circumcision refers to the removal of part or all of the female nucleus and labia minora, and then suturing them with ordinary needles, thread or thorns. There were no anesthesia or disinfection measures throughout the process. The recipient was in extreme pain and had to endure the risks of tetanus infection, AIDS transmission and even death. Kerry (played by Fatoumata Coulibaly) is a wise and virtuous woman. She still vividly remembers the painful experience of undergoing circumcision in her youth, and in the following decades, she has been constantly enduring the double torture brought by the wound to both her spirit and body. Kerry did not want his daughter to suffer such hardships any longer, so he did everything possible to prevent her from undergoing circumcision. Her actions were questioned and blamed by the villagers, and the pressure from the surroundings was growing increasingly... This film was nominated for the Special Award and the UN Certain Regard Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, and won the Best Actress Award (Fatoumata Coulibaly) at the 2005 Manila International Film Festival.[Collapse]
