The story takes place in Britain in the 1820s. Mary (played by Kate Winslet) is a paleontologist. However, this profession clearly cannot provide her with a comfortable life, so Mary is still struggling on the poverty line. To treat her seriously ill mother, Mary makes a living by collecting fossils on the beach and selling them to tourists. One day, a man named Roderick (played by James McArdle) found Mary and offered a very high salary, hoping that Mary could take care of his seriously ill wife Charlotte (played by Saoirse Ronan). Unable to resist the temptation of money, Mary agreed. However, not long after Mary met Charlotte, their vastly different thoughts sparked off.
