The story tells of a British family troupe living in India. They toured Shakespeare's plays between towns and villages. Through their journey, the audience can see that the face of India is constantly changing. Old things are being replaced by new ones. Indian princes have become hotel owners. Sports have become more important than cultural activities. Traditional theaters have been replaced by Bollywood films.
