The story tells of a true event during the African American civil rights movement in the United States. In 1955, Emmett Louis Thiel, who was only 14 years old, was accused of having an improper relationship with a white woman and was kidnapped and brutally killed. Two white suspects were acquitted by an all-white jury. Emmett's mother, Mamie Til-Mobley (played by Danielle), decides to open the coffin at Emmett's funeral and have Jet magazine publish photos of her son's funeral. She wants people all over the world to know what happened to her son. Subsequently, thousands of people saw Emmett's photo, which also made the Emmett case a symbol of judicial injustice against black people in the South. Ubi plays Emmett's grandmother, Alma Kartan.[Collapse]
