In 1950, a local resident of a certain island in the United States, Carl, died while fishing at night. The sheriff thought there were many suspicious points in this case. The forensic doctor, who had a strong anti-Japanese bias, brought the Japanese-American resident, Kazuo Miyamoto, into the case. The court immediately began the trial of Miyamoto. The island newspaper reporter Ismail (played by Ethan Hawke) was very concerned about the trial due to his personal relationship. It turned out that Miyamoto's wife, Kinda Hatsune (played by Yuki Kudo), was Ismail's childhood sweetheart. Later, when the United States and Japan declared war, the Japanese residents on the island began to be excluded. The Kinda family was also treated unfairly and sent to a concentration camp for guardianship and labor. Ismail spoke up for justice but was threatened by his compatriots instead. This relationship had to come to an end. Ismail checked the weather records on the island that night and obtained crucial evidence that Bill had died in an accident, but this meant that his reunion with Chu Zhi was no longer possible. As the trial progressed, more and more evidence pointed to Miyamoto. Meanwhile, the recently quelled war made the locals view the Japanese through tinted glasses. Ismael thought it over and over again and made his final decision... This film won several awards, including the Best Cinematography Award from the Chicago Film Critics Association in 2000.[Collapse]
