Tong Lishi (played by Liang Ming) lost her husband at an early age and has been living with her daughter Daxiang (played by Li Meng), relying on each other for survival. The lonely mother and daughter went to the city to visit their aunt, Aunt Sun (played by Tian Taixuan), and thus met a man named Shang Youlin (played by Li Wei). The kind-hearted Shang Youlin often helped Tong Lishi, who was living in hardship. Over time, a sincere affection gradually developed between the two. The greedy and treacherous Aunt Sun, in collusion with the couple Cui Huzi (played by Cui Chaoming) and Yan Zhihu (played by Li Lingyun), plotted to sell Daxiang to the brothel they ran, and Daxiang thus became a prostitute. Seeing her daughter being treated inhumanely, the desperate Tong Lishi chose to commit suicide by jumping into the river. However, Shang Youlin did not give up hope. He tried every possible way to redeem Daxiang, but ultimately failed. In 1949, Beiping was liberated.
