This film is adapted from the eponymous autobiography published by former South African President Nelson Mandela in 1994. He is a country boy who walks barefoot through the mountains. He is a passionate young lawyer who shouts "Long live freedom!" He was the leader of the anti-government armed revolution. He was a political prisoner who had been imprisoned, exiled and served in labor for 27 years. He was the first black president elected in the first democratic election in South Africa's history, and his name was Mandela. Mandela (played by Idris Elba) devoted his entire life to fighting against the apartheid policy. He transformed from a revolutionary fighter to a peace fighter, turning a severely racially divided country into an equal and harmonious one, setting an example for the world, but at a heavy price. At the age of 43, Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges including attempting to overthrow the government. He was separated from his wife Winnie (played by Naomie Harris) and has since had no chance to accompany his descendants as they grow up. Even after 27 years in prison, when he finally regained his freedom and became a president and a hero respected by all, he lost the woman he loved most in his life. Years of separation and political persecution pushed the couple further and further apart. When Mandela advocated the ideas of peace and tolerance, Winnie declared war with hatred. Between the freedom of the people and the woman he loved, Mandela made a painful choice.[Collapse]
