The film is adapted from a real historical event. The story takes place in the 16th century. King Henry VIII (played by Robert Shaw) fell in love with a woman named Anne (played by Vanessa Redgrave). He wanted to divorce the queen, but was restricted by the constraints of secular morality. Henry VIII found the Lord Chancellor Thomas (played by Paul Scofield) and asked him to sign the divorce decree, attempting to reduce his own guilt by virtue of Thomas's high reputation. Thomas was an upright person all his life. The king's unreasonable demands greatly troubled him, who was extremely just, because he knew that those who refused the king were doomed to have no good ending. Guided by his inner conscience, Thomas adhered to his principles. He refused to sign and resigned from his position. Even so, the upright man could not escape the fate of a tragic death in the end.[Collapse]
