In 17th-century France, the music master Sand Columbus (played by Jean-Pierre Marielle) was deeply immersed in the pain of losing his wife and couldn't extricate himself. He led a secluded life away from the hustle and bustle with his two daughters. Whenever he played the Viol in his hand, his wife's graceful figure would appear before him. The handsome and talented young man Marles (played by Guillaume Depardieu and Gerard Depardieu) became a disciple of Columbus and learned music from him. With an arrogant and proud heart, he paid no attention to his master's teachings and was solely focused on his skills to become a renowned lute player at Versailles. The master and apprentice thus broke up, and Columbus' eldest daughter Madeleine (Anne Brochet) followed closely behind her lover Marles. Indulging in a life of luxury and materialism, Marles, beheaded by the appearance of extravagance, gradually lost his true nature. His love with Madeleine was shattered, and the "Girl in the Dream" he once created for his beloved also became a painful memory... The film won seven awards at the 1992 Cesar Awards, including Best Cinematography, best Costume design, best original soundtrack, best Sound, best Director, Best Supporting actress (Anne Brochet), and best picture.[Collapse]
