Abe (played by Joaquin Phoenix) is a charming university philosophy professor and is deeply loved by his classmates and teachers. Dealing with his ID and superego every day inevitably makes Abe fall into the crisis of nihilism. One day, a female student named Jill (played by Emma Stone) came to his class. Jill was warm and cheerful. Many of her philosophical thoughts coincided with those of Abe. Soon, a deep affection developed between the teacher and the student. One day, Abe and Jill were having a meal in a restaurant when they overheard the person sitting next to them complaining that a certain judge had deprived her of custody of her child. What Jill didn't expect was that not long after, she saw the news of the judge's death. Jill thought it over and over again and felt that this matter was inextricably related to Abe. Abe's colleague Rita (played by Parker Posey) was also well aware of this, but Rita had her own plans.[Collapse]
