During the 2008 financial crisis, the gypsum factory, a key economic pillar of the small town of Umpier in Nevada, USA, went bankrupt. The town was deserted and its postal code was also abolished. After her husband's death, Fern (played by Francis McDormand), who had spent almost her entire life in the small town of Umpier, was unable to support herself alone. To minimize her living costs, she loaded her humble belongings onto a modified van and began a life of working while traveling westward on the road. She works as a temporary worker on an Amazon assembly line, in a cafe at an amusement park, and in a national forest park. Along the way, she met and got to know many box van residents, helped each other and forged friendships.[Collapse]
