Ethan Edwards (played by John Wayne), a veteran who participated in the American Civil War, returned to his hometown of Texas after the war and came to his brother's farm hoping to reunite with his family. Essen had always had a crush on his sister-in-law and kept this feeling deep in his heart. However, a surprise attack by the Comanche people completely shattered Essen's wish. In this attack by the Indians, Essen's brother and sister-in-law were both killed, and his niece Debbie (played by Natalie Wood) was looted. Her fate remains unknown. In order to avenge his beloved sister-in-law and find out Debbie's whereabouts, Essen, accompanied by his brother's adopted son Martin (played by Jeffrey Hunter), embarked on a difficult search period. Ethan spent five years and a thousand dollars in bounty to find the whereabouts of Chief Aska. However, Ethan's bone-chilling hatred for the Indians and his almost crazy actions made Martin start to doubt the real reason why his uncle searched for Debbie. Martin was even worried that Ethan would kill Debbie, who had already been assimilated by the Indians.[Collapse]
