In 1942, World War II was in full swing. At this time, Japan was invincible and undefeated on all the battlefields in Asia. In the tropical jungle of Java Island in Southeast Asia, a detention center for Japanese prisoners of war stands there. Army Lieutenant Senoi (played by Ryuichi Sakamoto) and Sergeant Ohara (played by Takeshi Kitano) jointly manage the detention center. Ohara was rude and heartless. He never showed mercy to European and American prisoners of war, and was even more cruel to those with homosexual tendencies. In contrast, the handsome Seino appears much more gentlemanly. British Army Major Jack (played by David Bowie) is handsome and dashing. His first appearance stirred Shi's ambition. In the prisoner-of-war camp where same-sex culture prevailed, many emotions were uncontrollable. In the days that followed, the two were torn between the grudges between home and country and personal emotions, engaging in a hard and cruel struggle in each other's hearts... This film is adapted from the novel by British author Lawrence Baster and won five awards at the Kinema Junpo Audience Choice Awards in 1984, including Best Director, Best Film, Best Original Score, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Takeshi Kitano) at the Mainichi Film Awards in 1984.[Collapse]
