This film is adapted from real battles during the Vietnam War. In November 1965, the Vietnam War escalated to a stage where the US military was directly involved in the war. The number of US troops stationed in Vietnam has been constantly increasing. Major Moore (played by Mel Gibson) is ordered to train a group of new recruits into real soldiers. At the same time, many family members accompanying the soldiers flood into the unit. The soldiers play the dual roles of husbands and soldiers. The warm atmosphere is mixed with a hint of unease. To relieve the monotony of military life, the troops held a grand evening party. The time to set out had come. At the ceremony, Moore solemnly promised, "Bring back every soldier." Moore and his troops were parachuded into a river valley near Cambodia, where a large number of North Vietnamese troops were stationed. The undermanned US forces were surrounded heavily and suffered heavy casualties. Eventually, with the assistance of artillery and helicopters, the battle situation began to deadlock. The next day, the battle advanced to the hill but still failed to break through the encirclement. Moore sought help from the air force. Due to the close distance between the two sides, some ground troops were injured by the US petrol bombs. Photojournalist Joe (portrayed by Barry Pepper) captured scenes of cruelty during the battle. On the third day, the US forces were preparing for a decisive close combat when the air force support was in place and the Vietnamese army was completely wiped out.[Collapse]
