A smoking cessation order turned the narrow back alley into a new social area, and countless men and women who smoked had to hide there to smoke. No matter what position they hold or what they do, there they are all just smokers. All they do is smoke together and crack jokes together. Zhi Ming (played by Shawn Yue), from an advertising company, and Chun Jiao (played by Miriam Yeung), who works at a cosmetics counter, met there. Zhi Ming's misfortune and his act of lighting a cigarette for Chun Jiao made her develop a slight affection for this gentle man. Over the following days and nights, the two of them exchanged text messages from time to time and made appointments to smoke at the street corner. Emotions were transmitted through the thumb, and love grew in the smoke. Eventually, an ambiguous text message led to the breakup of Chun Jiao and her boyfriend Jia Hao (played by Huang Debin). Just as Chun Jiao was about to devote herself wholeheartedly to her relationship with Zhi Ming, Zhi Ming's attitude became ambiguous. The smoke continued to linger in the back alley at the street corner, but it could not bridge the gap that had emerged between the two. With the determination to increase tobacco taxes issued, a large number of smokers began to search for and stockpile cigarettes. During the search for cigarettes, Zhi Ming and Chun Jiao met again at the convenience store where they first encountered each other. That night, the two made an appointment to go and look for cigarettes together... This film was completed in just 15 shooting days over five weeks, which was a rather short shooting period. Due to the excessive use of foul language and realistic scenes, "A Simple Life" was classified as a third-tier film when it was released in Hong Kong.[Collapse]
