Thomas (played by John Bell) lost his parents at a young age and grew up in an orphanage. Due to his stuttering, Thomas was a boy who lacked confidence and was introverted since childhood. He was often bullied in the orphanage. One day, Thomas was invited into the dean's office for causing trouble. There, he met a lady named Mary (played by Connie Nielsen), and thus Mary became Thomas' new mother. Mary's husband, Eric (played by Aidan Quinn), doesn't like Thomas. He wants a more confident and sunny child, so he is very cold to Thomas. Fortunately, Thomas soon made many new friends. Under their guidance, Thomas's personality gradually became more cheerful.
