The unprecedented Great East Japan Earthquake, along with the subsequent tsunami and nuclear leakage, destroyed the lives of countless people, among whom was 15-year-old middle school student Yuichi Sumida (played by Masataka Someya). After the disaster, he lived in his family's charterhouse with his mother (played by Makiko Watanabe), as well as other disaster victims such as Yano (played by Tetsuya Watanabe) and Tamura (played by Manabu Buyuki). Occasionally, he endured harassment from his father (played by Ken Mitsuishi), who was addicted to gambling, and the gangster Kaneko (played by Dian Dian), who was collecting debts. Among her classmates, Keiko Chazawa (played by Tomomi Nikaido) is the only one who admires Sumida. She records every brilliant quote of Sumida and intrudes into his life on her own. They are willing to be ordinary people with no achievements, but they cannot avoid the cruel life's merciless crushing on them. On a bloody night, Sumida committed an unforgivable crime, thus beginning a self-destructive life... This film is adapted from the original work of the same name by manga artist Masami Furuta and won the Best Newcomer Award at the 68th Venice Film Festival in 2011 (Masataka Someya, Tomomi Do).[Collapse]
