The story takes place in the bustling metropolis of Paris. A young man from the countryside comes here to seek out his elder brother George (played by Thierry Neuvic), but is shut out because he doesn't know the password of his brother's apartment. Just then, The elder brother's girlfriend, Ann (played by Juliette Binoche), appeared before the young man and led him into the apartment. The teenager treated the beggar Maria (played by Luminita Gheorghiu) roughly and was severely criticized by the black teacher Amadu (played by Ona Lu Yenke). Later, the police came and instead arrested Maria and Amadu. Maria thus returned to her hometown in Romania and to her husband Douglas (played by Bob Nicolescu).
