In the early Showa period of Kobe, Japan, an ordinary street was home to the Meio family of four who ran a Western-style ready-to-wear store. The head of the family, Shengfu (played by Toyotomi Mizutani), is kind and amiable, and has an enlightened mind. Toshiko (played by Ran ITO), a Christian housewife, is dexterous and takes care of everything at home. The eldest son, Hajime (played by Ryuki Yoshida), wore a sweater knitted by his mother with English letters on it and was called "Teenager H" by his friends. His younger sister, Yoko (played by Yurina Hanada), was smart, naughty and very likable. Frequent contact with foreigners has made the Meiwei family more tolerant in their interactions with others. However, as the international situation becomes increasingly tense, the lives of ordinary Japanese people have also been greatly affected.
