In folk tales, Master Xiao Shen, who is said to be able to travel between Yin and Yang and understand ghosts and gods, experienced three supernatural events from his apprenticeship to his mastery of the art: being close to the spirit of the netherworld, using a substitute to ward off disasters, and returning to the soul across generations. Through his ability to travel through the netherworld, he solved these strange events and, in the process, dispelled the confusion he had when he was a disciple, and understood that "people benefit from emotions.
