During the Vietnam War, when American soldiers passed through Hong Kong on their way to the battlefield, they would stop in Wan Chai. This led to a unique atmosphere in Wan Chai for several years since the late 1950s, where people relied on them for a living, such as tattoo artists, beggars, "bastards" looking for their fathers with photos, Ah Fei, and Bar girls who were actually prostitutes.
