In the autumn of 1949, the People's Liberation Army marched to the Hani Mountains. On the first day the troops entered the mountains, they happened to encounter black-faced men blocking the way and robbing the chieftain's horse gang. The chieftain reported to the People's Liberation Army that the remnants of Ma Peng had fled the country. There was only a gang of black-faced bandits in the area who committed all kinds of evil deeds, including murder and arson. The masses, however, reported that the black-faced bandits specialized in robbing the chieftain and Ma Peng and never caused any harm
