In 1937, the Japanese invasion of China broke out, causing great suffering to the land and the people. Under the ravages of the Japanese invaders, the capital Nanjing at that time could not escape the fate of falling. Wei Duanben (played by Shao Feng), a minor civil servant in the Nanjing government, was forced to leave his first wife Wang Yulan behind and follow the fleeing crowd to the secondary capital Chongqing.
