Rising with the sun and going to bed when it sets, for thousands of years, human beings have followed ancient survival rules and strived to survive in harsh environments. On a solitary island in the Setonaikai Sea of Hiroshima, there lives a silent couple (played by Nobuko Eguchi and Yasuji Tanaka) and their two lively and sensible children (played by Nobuki Tanaka and Masaki Hori). As there was no fresh water on the island, the couple had to get up early every morning and row to the opposite island to carry water. The family's food, clothing, transportation and irrigation of crops all relied on the couple carrying water.
