The story takes place after the end of the Civil War. Howard (played by James Stewart), a veteran who retired from the front line, wants to return to his hometown and lead a peaceful life again. But upon reaching the destination, he found that the land that should have belonged to him had long been occupied by others. If Howard wanted to redeem the land, he would have to pay a considerable price. Penniless Howard decides to become a bounty hunter to earn extra money. He sets his sights on the bandit Ben (played by Robert Ryan). During the process of capturing Robert, Howard met two helpers, Roy (played by Ralph Meeker) and Jesse (played by Millard Mitchell). The two mistakenly thought Howard was a detective, so they were willing to help him unconditionally.
