In the 1970s, Ma Jie (played by Wen Zhang), a city educated youth, came to a rural area in Northwest China to work as a rural laborer. He was attracted by the call of the beautiful donkey in the village - Hei Liu. Ma Jie was annoyed that Hei Liu wouldn't let him ride. During a work-related injury while getting stitches at the clinic, he stole an anesthetic and gave it to Hei Liu. Captain Da Lian (played by Yue Hong) thought Hei Liu was ill and was extremely worried. Ma Jie miraculously "cured" Hei Liu, won the trust of Da Lian and the team, and became a livestock keeper. While feeding the donkey, Ma Jie secretly fell in love with CAI Feng (played by Bai Jing), a young woman in the village. Meanwhile, Ma Jie became increasingly dissatisfied with the special treatment of the Black Six for breeding without working, and secretly angry at Da Lian's claim that "donkeys are more valuable than humans". In his venting, he even broke the "lifeline" of the Black six. Black Six, unable to breed or work, was slaughtered by Ma Jie. But little did he know that Black Six's younger brother, the donkey Black Seven, would henceforth be sworn enemies with Ma Jie. The struggle between humans and donkeys intensified.[Collapse]
