The story takes place in Connecticut, the United States in 1844. Miranda (played by Gene Tierney), who was born into a poor family, received a letter from her cousin Nicholas (played by Vincent Price), who invited Miranda to his home. Serve as the governess of his daughter Catherine (portrayed by Connie Marshall). In Miranda's mind, the Nicholas family was a microcosm of upper-class life.
