The film is adapted from the novel of the same name written by Alex Flynn in 2007, packaging a legendary story of a beauty and a beast in a thriller and gothic guise. The story takes place in Manhattan, New York. Kyle (played by Alex Pettyfer), a handsome but ill-manded rich young man, invites his classmate Kendra (played by Mary-Kate Olsen) to his party to make her look bad. Humiliated, Kendra immediately cast a curse on him, turning him into a "monster beast" that everyone detested. Only when a girl truly fell in love with him from the bottom of her heart would the curse be lifted. Kyle's father, seeing his son so cold, drove him to their Brooklyn house and placed him under house arrest, leaving him only a devoted butler and a blind tutor.
