In 1936, during the Long March, the Red Army passed through the Tibetan areas along the Jinsha River. The Kuomintang colluded with the powerful tycoon Qiu Wanli, attempting to prevent the Red Army from crossing the river and moving northward. Qiu Wanli ordered his henchmen to disguise themselves as Red Army soldiers and kidnap the only daughter of the chieftain Sangge, Zhu Ma, sowing discord between the chieftain and the Red Army. The Red Army adhered to the Party's ethnic policies, rescued Zhuma, crossed the Jinsha River and marched to the border of the Tibetan region. Qiu once again sneaked into the Tibetan region first. It is said that Zhuma has been killed by the Red Army and ammunition and weapons are provided for the chieftain to fight against the Red Army. To debunk the enemy's rumors, Jin Ming, the political instructor of the Red Army, led a squad to escort Zhu Ma home. But the soldier who was ordered to deliver a message to the chieftain was killed by the enemy. In a critical moment, Jin Ming ventured up the mountain to negotiate with the chieftain. The chieftain was skeptical and sent his trusted followers down to investigate the situation. Unexpectedly, the envoy was ambushed by Qiu Wanli again. Despite his injuries, he went to the Red Army's base to explain the situation. Under Qiu Wanli's instigation, the chieftain was about to kill Jin Ming, who was being held hostage. Zhu Ma led the Red Army to arrive and exposed the enemy to the chieftain. Qiu Wanli fled in a panic and fell into the Jinsha River, where he died. The Red Army opened up the road and continued to march northward.[Collapse]
