The story takes place during World War II. British soldier Eric (played by Colin Firth) was captured by the Japanese army and sent to work as a laborer on the Thailand-Myanmar Railway. Eric secretly hid a radio. By listening to the radio, he learned that Japan was already at the end of its strength in the war and wouldn't last long. He and his comrades-in-arms thus relied on this little bit of comfort and hope to survive with strength. Ultimately, Eric's secret was discovered by the Japanese army. They subjected Eric to inhumane torture, which caused him immense mental trauma. This trauma continued to affect his life every minute even after he formed his own family thirty years after the war ended. One day, Eric learned that an officer named Takashi Nagase (played by Hiroyuki Sanada), who had tormented him back then, was still alive. He decided to visit him.[Collapse]
