Adapted from Kafka's unfinished novel "America", but it does not focus on the real America. Instead, it is more like an allegory about the United States without a detailed timeline. Carl? Rothman accepted his uncle's invitation to move to the United States due to a scandal. However, he couldn't break away from the old habits of the European continent. What was worse, the class structure in Europe prevented him from making a living with his own hands. This film version focuses on the cruel and unpredictable class relations created by capitalist society. At the same time, it remains faithful to the original work without adding the ending of the film. The consistent operation of the Straubs style and the perfect combination of Kafka atmosphere: fixed mid-shot positions, expressionless actors, deliberately stiff body language and speech of characters, emphasis on side close-ups, and deliberately abrupt camera advancement and panning. From this, we can seek experimental possibilities for adapting Kafka's works.[Collapse]
