In the early 1970s in Beijing, adults were so busy "causing revolution" that they had no time to pay attention to children. Coupled with the fact that schools were closed and there was nothing to do, teenagers, represented by the boys in the military compound, sought their own pleasures by making a fuss, fighting, causing trouble and taking pictures of women, squandering excessive hormones. Ma Xiaojun (played by Xia Yu) is such a young man. One of his hobbies is to use the master key to unlock someone else's house when no one is around and sneak in to have some fun. It is precisely in this way that the photo of the girl Milan (played by Ning Jing) catches Ma Xiaojun's eyes before she does. Through the "boss" Liu Yiku (played by Geng Le) in the courtyard, Ma Xiaojun met Milan again, whom he had caught a glimpse of by chance at the gun depot before, and began to officially regard him as his dream lover. However, in Milan's eyes, Ma Xiaojun was just a kid, and the person she liked was the mature, steady and handsome Liu Yiku. From then on, Ma Xiaojun embarked on a bittersweet teenage life. This film is adapted from Wang Shuo's short story "Fierce Animals". Xia Yu won the Best Actor (Silver Lion Award) at the 51st Venice International Film Festival for this film.[Collapse]
