Young Malik (played by Tahar Rahim) was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in criminal activities. In prison, he soon caught the attention of Luciani (played by Niels Arestrup), the leader of the Corsican gang, because of his half Arab ancestry. The latter forced Malik to assassinate an Arab criminal, and Malik accomplished the mission. During his prison life, he was protected by the Luciani gang. A year later, the prison transferred some Corsican prisoners. Luciani's power was greatly weakened. He regarded Malik, who had learned the Corsican language, as his eyes and ears. At the same time, Malik kept attending remedial classes at the prison school. Soon, Malik got the opportunity to work outside during the day. With the help of the connections he gained in the prison, Malik got involved in the marijuana business and made a lot of profits. Gradually, he broke free from Luciani's control and started his own business... This film won the Grand Prix of the Jury at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.[Collapse]
