During World War II, Ma Da SAN (played by Jiang Wen), a farmer from Guajiatai Village in Hebei Province, China, led a peaceful life under Japanese rule. One night, the guerrillas kidnapped Japanese army soldier Hanaya Kozaburo (played by Teruyuki Kagawa) and translator Dong Hanchen, tied them up and stuffed them into sacks, placing them at Ma Dasan's home. They instructed Ma to keep a close watch on them and come to bring people on New Year's Eve a few days later. Ma Da SAN and the villagers watched over the two people with trepidation. Hua Wu Xiao Sanlang and Dong Hanchen sent out several distress signals, but all were defused by the villagers. Half a year has passed. The villagers are worried that the matter will be exposed, but they dare not put the flower houses and other places away. Ma Da SAN was eventually persuaded by Dong Hanchen and sent Hua Wu and Dong to the Japanese military police station in exchange for food. Sakazuka Inouji, a Japanese military police officer, was a fellow townsman of Hanaya. On the surface, he was polite to Ma and the others, but behind his back, he accused Hua Wu of disgracing the imperial army and beating him. The commando troops went to Ma's village to have a party with the villagers and deliver food. When they were drunk, they suddenly showed signs of killing.[Collapse]
